Only two more weekends to enjoy the Home Café Days


The "Home Café Days" campaign will come to an end on September 17, inviting you to enjoy culinary adventures and cultural surprises in places where everyday life is usually busy. 

Thousands of visitors have already discovered the gems of Latvian domestic tourism, the bouquet of flavours typical of each region and the hospitality of the local people. All this can be discovered in just two more weekends - 9-10 September and 16-17 September.

Everyone should experience traditional Liv and Kurzeme dishes at least once in their lifetime! In 16 home cafés from Ovīši to Ģipka, you will find a delicious and varied selection of dishes, as well as a special cultural offer that is unique to this region. The Kubalu School - museum and home café "Skolas maize" invites you to return to the classroom, where you will be served delicious food and will also have the opportunity to learn how the first teacher, Ernest Dinsberg, worked. 

The owners of the Šteburupes Paliena home café have created a permaculture garden, about which they are ready to tell you more, and also show you the goat pens. And you can find out what trout mousse tastes like at the Zvīņu mājas kafejnīca (Zvīņu home café), which is participating for the fourth time. The East Wind Café will offer an atmosphere and music typical of the East, with a variety of colours and flavours in Moroccan cuisine, a creative workshop, an open-air cinema and a photo corner. At the Bees Bandeniekos brancho café, you will get acquainted with bees and bee life, sleep in a bee bed and make beeswax candles. The dish of the day is venison goulash soup.

The Selian Islands are waiting for those who love picturesque landscapes, clusters of farmsteads, small villages, marshes, meadows and wildlife, proud but respectful locals. Over the two days, the widest range of home cafés (29!) await to surprise and make you fall in love with this diverse part of Latvia.

 The home café "Vinila sēta" will fill your stomach with autumn vegetable soup, apple pie and warm drinks, while the landlord Vinila Valdis will tell you about the rock records of the 60s and 70s, show you the best tunes and his extensive collection. 

On 9 September, Muna Mama is dedicating the Home Café Day to the family traditions of Kaldabruņa, which is why the dishes are prepared "As muna mama did". Visitors will be able to explore the multimedia exhibition "Midnight in the Meadow", take part in a glass-making workshop. 

The main event of the day is a concert by Juris Kaukulis at 15.00. The café "Vecsaliena Manor Castle" will be held for the first time (only on 10.09.) and the food will be served according to the taste of the castle owner. A cultural programme will be offered, reflecting the story of the Old Saliena Manor Castle - a guided tour of the castle, painting exhibitions, historical dances, autumn floristry demonstrations and much more. "Stop Sunākste is looking forward to a "cīši lōbu" meal and creative activities - horse-drawn carriage rides (pony rides for children), dancing and singing at the "Free Microphone", exhibitions "Sunākste Singing Festival 150!" visit. The home café "Pie Medņa" welcomes visitors of all ages. In the old inn you can see an exhibition of weaver Gunta Grauze's works, children can work in clay, drawing and making workshops. The band "Heather Honey" or Pēteris Draņevičs will also play music.

This year, 16 home cafés in the Ogre region will offer hearty second courses, a variety of soups, delicious desserts with childhood flavours and exquisite sweet dishes. The home café "Living Clay - Masterclasses with a twist" will be open only on 9 September. With a registration, guests will be offered a ~1.30 hour programme with food, a talk about ceramic processing, firing processes and activities such as clay painting or clay wind chime making. 

A selection of cakes and hearty main courses will be served in the "Ielejas" café, where the owners' hobby is baking pastries and sourdough bread. The "Lībiešu Street Café" is located almost in the heart of Ikšķile. Vegetarians and vegans can also enjoy the menu, while you can get active at a painting workshop, on the local disc golf course or, with a cup of coffee in hand, learn more about the history of Ikšķile. Learn how chocolate is made at the café "Rūgts! Chocolate". At least 8 types of chocolate will be offered in a tasting package.

Home cafés in Pāvilosta, Durbe and Liepāja will be waiting to introduce you to the "Taste of Autumn in Southern Courland". Did you know that Santa Claus lives in Ziemupe, a village by the sea? Together with his helpers, he will treat you to Dwarf Soup, Dwarf Syrup, Bear's Fur-coloured Brownie and other delicacies. All you have to do is go to the home café "Dwarf's Delicious Stories"! 

The café "Bleķa bowl" is located in the courtyard of the Karosta Prison. The menu includes pasta "flotski" and other themed dishes. Guided tour of the prison grounds. The "Dardzedži" café will be open in a 150-year-old house where the seventh generation lives. 

Guests will be served seasonal vegetable wok, cepellini, wild mushroom soup, vizboulette napoleon cake and a few other specialities. The entertainment programme includes an open-air cinema, a barefoot trail and sup-board rental. On 9 September only, the "SKARA Autumn Picnic" invites visitors to show what can be made from wild plants. Thistle cake, nettle cutlet, pine bark bread and crackers - an unusual and intriguing cuisine! The hosts are ready to tell you how to identify and use meadow plants.

"Home Café Days conclude in the Tukums area, where 27 café hosts will be welcoming visitors on 16 and 17 September. Many cafés have prepared musical surprises, creative workshops and seminars, entertainment for children, autumn harvest treats and their own products. A wide and varied choice to celebrate the magic of autumn! 

For example, harvest festivals and autumn works await at the home café "Smilgāji". After a really hearty meal, you will have the opportunity to stamp cabbages the old-fashioned way and taste freshly squeezed apple juice. Special entertainment - climbing the umurkumur pole for water gingerbread and other delicacies. 

At the home café "Pillars of Vecsāti" you will not be able to choose the one and only dish - pumpkin ravioli, Moroccan carrot soup, beef pie, turmeric Consomme... And at the end, there will be an exhibition of Andris Vitols' paintings, a photo story of the Old Saxon renewal or fortune-telling in coffee grounds! 

Only on 16 September, the "Taste of Jurciems Adventure" will take place in Lapmežciems. Along with the belly food, visitors will be able to taste the fishing villages of the neighbourhood, enjoying the atmosphere of the place, looking at the evidence of fishing and exploring the neighbourhood on walks with an audio guide. 

The "Zīlīītes" is the birthplace of Jānis Baltvilks, where a 4-course art and taste restaurant will be offered. Guests will be able to tango, write poetry, draw, paint and sing. The Greek Taverna, a home café, will offer traditional Greek cuisine (calamari, mussels and octopus, salads, homemade bread with sauces) with Greek music in the background.

After visiting the home café, you can fill in an evaluation questionnaire about the experience and enter a prize draw - the prize fund consists of five gift cards worth EUR 100 from the Latvian Rural Tourism Association "Lauku ceļotājs" for tourism and leisure services in Latvia. The draw will take place on 20 September.

This year, the campaign "Home Café Days" is being implemented for the third time by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) together with the Latvian Rural Tourism Association "Lauku ceļotājs" and will take place in Latvia from 14 July to 17 September. It is an opportunity for visitors to learn about and enjoy local cuisine - to get a new taste experience, and to indulge in an interesting cultural programme. This year, Home Café Days are taking place in a total of 42 destinations in Latvia.

1. Contact the café and book your visit to make sure there is a table waiting.

2. Check the time of the activity you have chosen - each activity may take place at different times.

3. Check if the venue you have chosen will accept cashless payments - not all event organisers will be able to accept credit cards.
