Summer is a must for trips to the beautiful Kurzeme coast and its beaches. To complement your trip, nature tourism and active recreation enthusiast, traveller Krista, who maintains the social media profiles "TravelWithKkrista" on Instagram and Tiktok, suggests five attractions on the Kurzeme coast that will be a great addition to your seaside getaway. The sights are listed in order, starting from Kolkasrags.
Excursion to the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre in Irbene
Take a spectacular tour of the Irbene radio telescope, once a secret military facility. Today it is home to the Ventspils University College Engineering Research Centre and guided tours are also available to immerse you in history and learn about the rich history of the site.
If you don't want to go on a guided tour, you can also see the Irbene radio telescope from a viewpoint 800 metres away, passing the main entrance.
Climb into the beautiful Užava Lighthouse
The Kurzeme coast is home to several impressive lighthouses, but the Užava Lighthouse (cover picture) is definitely notable for its special location - built on the 28-metre-high Teniroka forested dune. The lighthouse offers a magnificent view of the beach and the forested surroundings. For a nominal fee, active holidaymakers can also camp for the night next to the lighthouse.
Please note - opening hours vary per season! From 1 April to 31 October, the lighthouse is open only from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm; from 1 November to 31 March, the lighthouse is open only from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm.
See the amber collection and climb to the top of the tall Akmenrags Lighthouse
Climb up to the red lighthouse of Akmenrags, which stands stately on the edge of the beach, waiting to warn sailors of one of the most dangerous places on the Baltic Sea coast - under the salty waters lies a rocky shoal almost four kilometres long, with a water depth of only two metres.
The tower of the lighthouse itself is 37 metres high and offers a fantastic view of the surrounding forests and beach. On days when the sea is calm, more observant travellers will also be able to see the light shoals. You can also see an impressive collection of amber and stones by speaking to the lighthouse keeper.
Please note - each season has its own opening hours! From 1 January to 31 October, the lighthouse is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm; from 1 November to 31 December, it is closed.
A walk through the forest in the Bernati nature trails
Walk the nature trails, observe the surroundings from the unique lookout tower that looks like a boat and climb the highest dune in Latvia, Pusena, all in the Bernati Nature Park!
Bernati Nature Park is located in a European protected 'Natura 2000' nature area, where travellers can see a beautiful white sand beach, various sculptures and a thick pine forest with long, well-maintained paths.
Enjoy the beautiful Pape beach and nature park with wild horses
The Pape Nature Park will surprise you not only with its wild horses, hornbills and birdwatching, which live in the natural flood meadows, but also with its proximity to the sea, which has particularly light sands and a beautiful lighthouse, the closest to the edge of the sea of any lighthouse in Latvia.
The park itself has three nature trails, two of which can be enjoyed on foot or by bicycle. The nature park also includes several seaside villages where historic buildings have been preserved.
