Lithuanians turn abandoned houses into travellers' accommodation for donations

An unusual project is rapidly developing in Lithuania: abandoned farmhouses are being transformed into accommodation for travellers. The cleaned-up accommodation will be available to tourists in exchange for a symbolic donation. The original project aims to restore abandoned properties and promote sustainable tourism, writes "Ltr.lt".

According to the initiator of the project, Karolina Želve, the idea was born from the observation that more and more people are interested in eco-tourism, and the number of abandoned properties throughout Lithuania is constantly growing.

"I myself have stayed in one of these properties in Scotland. I used to go hiking when I was a student. When I was travelling, part of the experience was staying in such accommodation. When I lived in Sweden, I did a Master's degree in Sustainable Tourism. So, naturally, sustainable development, travel and tourism have always been on my radar. I noticed that this way of travelling is becoming more and more popular in Lithuania and I decided that it was time to create a network of such accommodation in Lithuania as well." "LTR quotes Karolina Želvi.

How will the accommodation be organised? Arriving at the house according to the given coordinates, the traveller will be given a code key to the door. To open it, you will need to confirm that you agree to the terms of use of the accommodation.

To unlock the accommodation, the traveller will need to make a donation and confirm their identity. The authors of the project do not intend to set a specific donation amount, which will depend on the tourist.

It should be said that the project organisers are not afraid of undisciplined travellers. They are confident that in most cases the accommodation will be used by responsible holidaymakers who know what ecotourism is and are prepared to clean up after themselves.

Everyone involved in the project, who looks after the abandoned houses and creates the accommodation network, works on a voluntary basis. Those who want to contribute - whether by helping to clean, donating items or helping financially - can do so on the project's website.

The first Travellers' Cottages are expected to open at the end of this summer.
