IKEA Latvia expands range of plant-based products and offers new version of hot dog

A new addition to the IKEA Swedish Bistro menu is the plant-based hotdog, a more sustainable version of the much-loved hotdog. Now, in addition to the classic and vegetarian hotdog, a new plant-based version is available at IKEA Swedish Bistro for just €0.70.

"Nowadays, we are making more conscious decisions about our diet and how it affects our health and our planet. For example, by choosing tastier and more sustainable food. A plant-based hotdog is not dissimilar in appearance and texture to a classic hotdog and is a tasty addition to the menu for anyone who wants to reduce meat consumption in their diet but loves hotdogs as much as we do," says Oleg Sorokhin, Head of Catering at IKEA.

Inspiring shoppers to choose plant-based products

IKEA wants to inspire even more shoppers to choose plant-based products by offering affordable hotdogs. "We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with less impact on the climate. Choosing plant-based food often has a lower climate impact than choosing animal products. That's why the plant-based hot dog is the latest innovative addition to IKEA's family of plant-based products," Sorocin adds.

A taste comparable to the iconic hot dog

The IKEA hot dog story began in the late 1980s when IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad introduced the hot dog, which served as proof of the combination of low price and quality. It was supposed to be the perfect way to end a visit to an IKEA store. Since then, the hot dog has become one of IKEA shoppers' favourite choices.

"IKEA has spent a lot of time developing the best experience for our customers. The taste and texture of a plant-based hot dog is a great alternative to a traditional hot dog," says Sorocin. One of the challenges in the development process was to create a plant-based hot dog with a texture as close as possible to the classic IKEA hot dog.

The vegetable hot dog contains rice protein, onions, apples, salt and pepper. It has a smoky, traditional sausage taste.
