An unforgettable weekend in Palanga

Palanga, of course, is mostly associated with the summer capital, where you can enjoy lazy, sun-drenched days. But sometimes you want to relax now, without thinking about the weather, which might interfere with your plans. Escaping the hum of everyday life for a weekend in Palanga is a great idea - get a good night's sleep in an accommodation, enjoy maximum relaxation in a spa, have a delicious meal in one of Palanga's restaurants and see the city from all sides.

Sleep in white sheets and enjoy the culinary diversity

If you're planning a holiday, you know that it all starts with the choice of accommodation. And in Palanga, there's plenty! For those who like the crisp white sheets of a hotel, you can stay in the simpler two- and three-star hotels, or stay with a touch of chic in the four- and five-star design and spa hotels just a stone's throw from the sea. There are also a number of villas and guesthouses in Palanga, but for nature lovers and budget travellers, there are also more basic apartments and camping. Everyone will be looked after, slept in and relaxed.

A well-fed person is a happy person, as the hospitable Lithuanians also understand. Visitors to Palanga don't have to worry about satisfying their hunger either, as there is plenty on offer. Gourmets will appreciate the offer of high-end restaurants, those looking for new tastes can visit Ukrainian, Georgian, Japanese and traditional Lithuanian eateries, while those looking for grilled dishes, pizzas or simple home-cooked bistros will not be disappointed in Palanga.

The beauty of ancient villas and museums

Palanga's ancient villas are both unique wooden and brick buildings, recognised as a cultural heritage of the city and reflecting its development from the beginning of the last century to the present day. At one time, the city's famous people, national politicians and celebrities could show off the beauty of their villas, but many of them can still be seen today. You can appreciate the beauty of private villas on a stroll through the streets of Palanga, and see them from the inside when you visit the villa museums. The Palanga Tourist Centre even offers a walking tour dedicated to the villas.

One of the villas is also home to the Palanga Resort Museum, where you can learn about the neighbourhood, the history of Palanga and the daily life of the people in the resort town. The museum building is an architectural monument and houses various archaeological, historical, photographic, numismatic, artistic and other exhibits.

One of the town's wooden summer houses also houses a memorial museum dedicated to the first mayor of Palanga, Jonas Šliūpas, who was appointed head of the town in 1933. Visitors can see the politician's office, learn about his life and find out more about the Lithuanian National Movement.

One of Palanga's most famous sights, Birutė Park, is also nearby and leads to the Amber Museum. The park was designed in the late 19th century by the famous French architect Edouard Francois André for Count Tiškevičius. The Neo-Renaissance-style former Count's mansion is now home to the Amber Museum, one of the most visited museums in Lithuania. It houses one of the richest collections of amber and its inclusions in the world, with around 30,000 pieces.

The museum explores the process of amber formation, extraction, processing and trade routes, and a unique exhibit is a lizard frozen in amber 50 million years ago - there are only seven similar finds in the world. The restored historic interior of the manor will also delight the eye, giving an insight into the life of Lithuania's most famous noble family, the Counts of Tiškevičius.

Relax your body and mind in the pools and the Illusion House

Healthy body, healthy spirit! If swimming in the sea was not enough or the weather is not favourable, you can relax and exercise your body in the water in one of the pools and multifunctional complexes. There are several of them in Palanga, but this time we'll highlight two.

The Palanga Swimming Pool is a multifunctional leisure and entertainment venue for the whole family, with a large pool equipped with jets, a SPA centre and a sauna area. 250 people can relax here at the same time. The pool offers various group classes, such as water aerobics. The sauna area has three different saunas - two steam saunas and a natural Himalayan salt sauna. Himalayan salt has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it also helps breathing, reduces allergies and boosts immunity. There is also a sauna therapist who teaches you how to bathe properly, using herbs, aromas and light therapy. The Palanga swimming pool has a sustainable philosophy, as it gets its electricity from solar panels on the roof, while the car park has charging points for electric cars.

You can also enjoy the wellness benefits of the water at the Atostogų parkas ("Holiday Park") leisure and wellness complex, located just outside Palanga. It has 16 swimming pools, a medical centre with spa services and other leisure facilities.

Once you've relaxed your body, it's time to relax your mind. Whether you're visiting Palanga as a couple or with the family, both young and old will love the Eureka House of Illusions. You can touch, climb on, and interact with the exhibits in a variety of games and attractions, such as trying out what it's like to stand on nails or walk through a tunnel of 3D paintings. Here, fun and brain training are guaranteed!

If you are not visiting Palanga for the first time, but are looking for an undiscovered corner of the resort town, make sure to stop by the Palanga Tourist Information Centre (Vitauta iela 94). In addition to recommendations and sightseeing, everyone can watch a short 3D film "Palanga Stories", which will give you a better insight into the history of Palanga's development as a city through the ages up to the present day.

In addition to all of the above, one of the must-stops is, of course, Palanga Pier and Basanaviča Street, which leads to it. Whatever the season, the 470-metre-long L-shaped pier overlooks the most beautiful sunsets. Basanaviča Street, on the other hand, beckons with its leisurely pace, traditional architecture, a quiet sit in a café and simply - enjoying the time and the place. See you in Palanga!
