Latvia worries about high alcohol consumption levels

Latvia has reported the highest absolute alcohol consumption in society among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries - 12.1 litres per capita, excluding consumption by tourists.

In 2021, this figure increased further to 12.2 l. The Ministry of Health therefore wishes to reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages among the Latvian population; to reduce the proportion of alcohol-related diseases and mortality in the long term.

Surveys show, drinking alcohol early in the morning, like on a Saturday morning, is generally not considered a healthy practice. Alcohol consumption can have both short-term and long-term health effects, and drinking alcohol in the morning can present specific risks and concerns:

Dehydration: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it can increase urine production and lead to dehydration. Consuming alcohol on an empty stomach, especially in the morning, can exacerbate this effect and contribute to dehydration, potentially leading to headaches, fatigue, and other discomfort.

Impact on Blood Sugar: Alcohol can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which can be particularly concerning when consumed without a meal. This can lead to feelings of shakiness, dizziness, and even hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Gastrointestinal Distress: Alcohol can irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, potentially causing digestive issues when consumed in the morning hours.

Disruption of Sleep Patterns: Alcohol can interfere with sleep quality and disrupt your natural sleep patterns. Consuming alcohol in the morning may further impact your ability to get restful sleep later in the day.

Dependency and Habits: Drinking alcohol in the morning can lead to unhealthy habits and patterns, potentially contributing to alcohol dependency and impacting daily functioning.

It's important to note that the overall impact of alcohol on health depends on factors such as the quantity consumed, individual tolerance, overall health, and any existing medical conditions. While some studies have suggested that moderate alcohol consumption, such as a glass of wine with a meal, may have certain health benefits (such as potential cardiovascular benefits), excessive or regular alcohol consumption can have significant negative consequences.

If you choose to consume alcohol, it's advisable to do so in moderation and in a responsible manner. Drinking on an empty stomach, especially early in the morning, is generally not recommended for maintaining optimal health and well-being. If you have specific health concerns or questions about alcohol consumption, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional.
