Spectacular celebrations in the Old Town on Riga's birthday

On 19 August 2023, the capital will celebrate Riga's 822nd birthday with a day-long event, concerts, circus and theatre performances for children, and a delicious cake competition. The evening before, on 18 August, the celebrations will be marked by a concert programme and a special audiovisual performance in Lucavsala.

On 19 August, a magnificent celebration will take place in the Old Town. Citizens and visitors are invited to take part in a rich programme of cultural and artistic performances, concerts and activities for all ages.

Conversations of Courage in Town Hall Square

The opening of Riga's birthday will take place in the Town Hall Square, which will be transformed into the Square of Courage, where the journalist Kristīne Garklāva will host the Courage Talks and greetings will be sent from Riga's multinational communities and the twin city of Tartu, the 2024 European Capital of Culture. The day will end with singing in Latvian and Ukrainian with the choir "Maska".

Celebrations in Cathedral Square

Several concerts will take place on Doma Square, featuring Latvian artists and international guests. The first to open the concert will be the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest winners Kalush Orchestra from Ukraine. Afterwards, popular Latvian bands such as "The Sound Poets" and "Carnival youth" will take to the stage, and the tastiest cake competition will take place.

The festival's cultural programme will be brought to a magnificent close with the concert performance "Songs of Courage and Joy" featuring popular and well-known musicians Miķelis Putniņš, "Maska" choir, Gustavo, Aija Andrejeva, Ieva Akuratereva, Kristīne Pāže, Ilona Bagele, Daumants Kalniņš and Jānis Apeinis.

Children's programme in the Cathedral Garden and at the foot of the Cathedral Church

Various activities for children will take place in the Dome Garden in the Old Town of Riga - creative workshops, theatre performances for different ages, concerts.

The programme will open with the theatre performance "Lemonade" for children from the age of three, while the youngest visitors will be able to listen to the concert "Baby in the ears, listening to music". Children aged four and up are invited to attend the performance "Cocoa and Spring", followed by the youth performance "Full Load".

Throughout the day, from 14.00 to 20.00, young visitors will be able to take part in children's workshops, Joy Processions and bubble activities in the Cathedral Church forecourt.

Jazz and classical music stage on Smilšu Street

This year, Smilšu Street will be transformed into an exciting jazz and classical music stage, bringing together local talent and world-renowned musicians. The event will offer a variety of concerts to suit all tastes.

The jazz and classical music stage will host the bands "P.S.PMS", "M.A.S.A" with musicians Rūdolfs Macatas, Kārlis Auziņš, Ivars Arutjunjans and Elīna Silova. The programme also includes a concert by the Polish group Zubek & Pentz Piazzolla Duo, performances by Viral Mind, and the Ukrainian artists Olga Lukachova and Funk Reunion.

The concert programme will be enriched by the concert of the group "Damas un kino", featuring Inga Šļubovska, Dita Krenberga, Inga Ozola, Ilze Ozoliņa. The concert programme will be complemented by the Indian classical music group "Chaturveni".

 A stage of joy and jokes at Līvu laukums

Līvu laukums will host a fun and jokes plaza - it will include joke sports games with the involvement of visitors, a worst jokes competition, mini-golf, circus performances and a concert by the "Little Prince" band.

Kristine Briņina's performance "Have we met before?" will take place at different times and places in Riga's urban environment and will be suitable for all audiences at all times and places. There will also be several circus performances with artists from Spain, Argentina, Belgium and the Netherlands.
